...bring May flowers.

May has been a pretty busy month and it's not even over yet! We met up with Grandma and Grandpa Ahlborn and Adam in Hot Springs, Arkansas to compete in a Warrior Dash (one of those get muddy 5Ks) on Mother's Day weekend. It was my first and I had a blast.  It is definitely more tiring than just running! Mother's Day was very special. Again, my first. Bryan was very good to me. Diamond earrings! I think they will be a special heirloom to pass on to Kate when she is older. I love them.
We toured the quaint town of Hot Springs and tested the "magical" hot spring water.
Kate had her first swim lessons this month.  The water was pretty cold that day, but there were no complaints out of her mouth!
Kate slept through the night! Look how happy she is- if only she would continue...
Kate is 3 months old. She has discovered her tongue and hands. She will bat at toys dangling over head. She is really quite the talker, especially after eating and before she goes down for a nap.  She got to spend a whole weekend with just Daddy and did great! Bryan said "being a mother isn't hard at all"- as he hands over Kate to mommy and crashes on the bed. It really made him appreciate all that I do and all that mothers do. Now my neighbors want to try it :)

April showers...

Kate had her 2 month appointment with all the shots included. She weighed 10 lbs 7.5 oz and 22 inches long.  Her hands are now opened 50% of the time, smiles at familiar faces, she tracks movement (she tends to always be looking at her left though), coos up a storm, and sleeps very well through the night (wakes around 2-3 am only). She is absolutely delightful!
Starting to get some baby fat! Still fits in 0-3 month clothes just fine.
She has got the stare down.  She definitely would win in the No Blinking contest.
She is super good at working those eye muscles, just like her daddy.
Bryan finally took his paternity leave from April 1-10.  He couldn't exactly do it earlier with Air Assault School and training out in the field.  It was nice to have him around.  I think its better later because I was starting to get tired- the adrenaline of being a mother finally turned off! While on leaven, we drove up to Oklahoma to visit with Grandma and Grandpa Ahlborn, Amy & Dallas, Renae & kids, Becky & kids, and Adam.  It was fun to show off little Miss Kate.  The little kids were always wanting to hold her and touch her head.  We mostly hung out at home because the weather was pretty random and cold.  I got a little sick while I was there and then Bryan got a little sick when we came back home to Louisiana.
I wish this photo weren't blurry.  Its pretty cute of us.

Kate had her first babysitter 20 April.  Bryan's friend Rocio helped me out while I was in Houston for drill.  Bryan accidentally signed up for the Tough Mudder the same weekend I had drill.  She did fabulous for Rocio and I now feel good about putting her in day care while I work.

Rebekah finally got a job! (well, if you don't count the Reserves) I was hired at the army hospital, but because of the furlough and civilian hiring freeze, I don't think I'll be working there until the new fiscal year in October.  So I got hired at the local hospital in the Emergency Department this past week.  I am super excited to be learning something new, as I have never been in the ER.  The shifts are really flexible, so it will work out great with Kate.

Bryan is super excited about our new fixer upper! Since this area lacks things to do, he (not we) decided to flip a house in the area. I just get to pick out the paint color, carpet, and fixtures.  We most likely will live in it after its all pretty and then sell it/rent it out. Should be a good project for him.  If only the bank would finish so we can finally close!

Koplin Grandparent's visit and Kate's Blessing

My parents came out to visit the best kept secret, Fort Polk Louisiana! They stayed for about 6 days, which was just about right.  I was sad to see them leave.  Its hard being away from family and missing out on everything.  I took them kayaking on Alligator Lake and biking on all the trail systems here on post.  We went out and got ourselves some crawfish at Mud Bugs.  It really isn't all that bad, just annoying breaking the shells to get the smallest amount of meat.
We went shopping down in old Leesville and all its boutiques, hardware stores, and thift shops.  My dad fixed stuff around the house while mom, me, and Kate rested.  We played a lot of games-Wacky Six, Train Dominoes, and Qwirkle. We even went to the park, Anacoco Lake, and played a game.  It was a little windy that day.
It was a lot of fun to have them around, help out, and share our beautiful baby girl with.

On Sunday, Bryan gave Kate a beautiful blessing at church.  I am so grateful my dad was able to be here to participate in that special moment.  Kate did great- no puke or poop on the dress.  I almost didn't make it out of the mother's lounge in time for the blessing though!
My mother helped me trim up my old blessing dress to fit Kate. I was a 10 pound baby, but was probably about 12 pounds when I was blessed, so the dress was a little big for my sweet girl.  We trim it down to size on the arms and waist line and it worked perfectly.
She is a pretty sleepy baby! We are definitely blessed with a sleeper!

Cute smile with her St. Patrick's Day bow!

One Month

My dad came with me to Kate's 1 month follow up appointment.  We had a bilirubin follow up too, since it takes awhile to get rid of that waste product for breastfed babies.  She is now at a 7.  Two weeks before she was 10, so we are trending down slowly.  She weighed 8 pounds 14 ounces and was 22 inches long.  Her head measured 36 inches.  She definitely doesn't have Bryan's head size, but pretty much everything else is Bryan!

Kate is nursing well. The first week was rough, but now she is a champ.  I produced too much milk in the beginning and possibly could have drowned Kate if I wasn't watching :) Being engorged is not fun the first couple of weeks while your body figures out what baby needs.  She started sleeping in her crib in her own room at 2 weeks because she is a very noisy sleeper (that is the best way to do it in my opinion).  I thought she was waking up to nurse again, but nope, she just makes lots of silly noises while she dreams.  She typically is in bed by 7-8pm, and wakes to eat 11-12, 2-3am, and 5-6am. Not too bad; especially since she wants to sleep all day too! It was hard for us to keep her up even a little bit during the day.  And we tried pretty dang hard with noise and movement.  Didn't work.  Kate is moving her head from side to side with noises, kicking her legs and arms uncontrollably, and arching her back. I love her cute little facial expressions as she is testing out her facial muscles.  My favorite is when she wrinkles her forehead or purses her lips:)

Two sisters in the ward threw me a post baby shower (Allison Crowe and Priscilla Baker).  It turned out super nice and a lot of my friends were able to make it.  They said that any party has a huge turn out because no one has anything else to do around here. Funny! We got lots of clothes in different sizes, handmade spit cloths, nesting boxes, pacifiers, toys, blankets, snack cups, nursing cover and diapers.  I could always use more pinks and purples in her wardrobe since we didn't know what we were having!

Air Assault

Five days after Kate was born, Bryan started Air Assault school (February 21- March 2).  No break for us.  No paternity leave for him.  Luckily, it was here on post and Bryan got to come home every night to help me out and study. I went out to visit him while they were repelling out of a Black Hawk at Honor Field.  Pretty cool.
I also went out, super early in the morning, to watch him finish the 12 mile ruck march.  He was the third one to cross the finish line.  2 hours 7 minutes.
After the ruck march, they had a ceremony and graduated around 80 soldiers.  Bryan is way in the back hiding behind someone because it was cold and windy.
I got to pin Bryan with his badge.
Good job babe!

Kate Nicole Ahlborn

My "due date" was the 9th of February.  Two of my friends here, who had due dates close to mine (the same day and the day before), had their little girls on the 6th and 7th of February.  This left me super anxious to meet my baby. I had a feeling I would go past my due date, which I thought was fine.  My mother had me at 43 weeks; not that I wanted to hold on to my baby for 3 more weeks!  I actually had a class I wanted to do the next week and it would have been easier if I were still pregnant.

Well on my due date, the little town we live in Leesville, was celebrating Mardi Gras.  Bryan and I didn't register for the 5K because we were unsure if we would make it, pending baby.  I was still pregnant so we ran the 5K.  I hadn't planned on running.  I guess I was just super excited with all the runners around me that I was able to run about 2/3 of the course. Bryan did really well.  He got 7th place overall, but because we didn't register it didn't get recorded.

After the run, we went home and changed to get ready for the Gumbo Cook-off and Mardi Gras Parade.  Surprisingly, this little town knows how to put on parades.  We got thrown tons of beads. I think we got 12 total and would have collected more, but we shared with the little neighbor kids around us.
The Pink Flamingo.  This float had 20 old ladies with pink hair.  It was awesome.
 Like the mask?
Saturday night, we went to our wards Valentines Party.  I guess I was willing to do anything to help this baby make an entrance into the world.  We had fun dancing and eating Valentines treats.

When Sunday came, I was still pregnant. I was getting depressed.  I didn't want to go to church because I dreaded the, "You're still pregnant" comment.  Plus all the advice to induce labor.  I will tell you first hand, nothing works.  I tried the herbal teas, the running, the squats and lunges, the hanky panky, ect. ect.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday rolled around with zero contractions or signs of labor.  I was able to go to my nursing course on Wednesday and Thursday.  On Friday (February 15), I decided it would be okay to have my membranes stripped.  I really wanted everything to happen naturally, but it was time to get something rolling. I didn't want to carry 43 weeks like my mother!

Around 1030pm, I started to feel some contractions.  I figured they were a figment of my imagination, since I pretended I felt some the whole past week.  They started to get stronger and more frequent.  Bryan started timing them, and then the poor daddy fell asleep.  I couldn't sleep, so I decided to take a bath and watch a show.  Around 0100am (16 February), the contractions were getting pretty intense.  I woke Bryan up and told him it was time to go to the hospital.  "Already? I thought you wanted to do most of the laboring at home?" "Honey, the contractions are like every other minute, I think it is time."

When I got to the hospital around 0200am, I was dilated to 5cm and was admitted.  My nurse, Angela, was amazing.  She helped me tremendously through an unmedicated delivery.  I was so grateful to be on intermittent monitoring (I only had to be on the monitor every 30 minutes to check the babies heart rate with the contractions) so I could walk around, squat, do the birthing ball (which I hated), get on my hands and knees, and take a shower.  Around 0500am, my contractions were pretty intense.  Bryan laughs at me because I would tell the nurse I was a 10 on the pain scale, but apparently I looked like I was more at a 7 to him. I told Bryan I don't think I can do this anymore, it is really painful. He told me to do something to distract me, so I decided to get off the bed and use the restroom to maybe help relieve some of the pain and felt like maybe my water broke (Bryan was a really good coach through the whole process). Angela checked me and I was dilated to 8-9cm.  She told me she needed to go get the delivery cart because the birth was progressing so quickly.  She also said the doctor would be in a c-sections, so they were calling the midwife to come in and help with the delivery.  All I could think about was, what... I am already ready to deliver? That can't be true.

I then began to have urges to push.  I went to the bathroom because sitting was the most comfortable position at that time.  I felt like I had to push with each contraction, but I knew I probably shouldn't because no one was in the room and I was sitting on a toilet.  Haha.  After about 3 pushes I went back to the bed on my hands and knees.  No baby of mine should be birthed in a toilet.  I tried not to push through the next contractions, but that was worse.  Finally, Angela came into the room with another nurse brought up from the ER.  Then the midwife showed up and 3 pushes later Kate Nicole Ahlborn was born at 0604am.  She came out wailing with an abgar score of 9 and 9. She was put directly on the chest and stayed there for the next 2 hours to bond and nurse. And we fell in love. I still couldn't believe she was a she.  Bryan and I thought for sure it was a boy!

Around 0830am, she got weighed and measured and daddy got to hold her.  Seven pounds 9 ounces. twenty inches long.  She has most of Bryan's facial features (widows peak, brown eyes, big bottom lip, eyebrow/forehead structure).  She has my chin.

There is nothing more special than a newborn, heavenly sent. Pregnancy, delivery are well worth the results of a beautiful, healthy baby.  It is amazing that you forget about the past nine months as soon as you hold that infant in your arms. I can't believe I am thinking about more children already.  Kate and I have had many tender moments together.  She is such a sweet, heaven sent spirit.  I am so blessed to be a mother.  It has also been tender to watch Bryan become such a protective and caring daddy.  He couldn't be more proud. I love him and can't believe we created something so perfect, so cute. We are in love with our little Kate.
